For the fourth consecutive year, the league engaged Firehouse Productions to handle the wide-ranging audio, wireless, and intercom needs for its signature in-season celebration. Between events at the Smoothie King Center, the Mercedes Superdome, and outside, at Champions Square.

Audio coordinator for the event was Mark Dittmar, Firehouse Productions’ VP of Design & Sales. His solution to the audio challenge was to rely on Shure wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring systems. “There were live TV and press events almost continuously for three days, and our job was to provide audio into and out of all the major venues, including PA systems, wireless microphones and monitors, plus intercoms,” he reports. “With 603 active frequencies at Smoothie King Arena alone, wireless was obviously our biggest concern. For microphone and in-ear systems, we relied exclusively on Shure.”

In Smoothie King Arena, the Firehouse team deployed 32 channels of Shure UHF-R wireless microphones, with another 24 channels of PSM 1000 in-ear monitoring systems for live coverage of the three-point, slam dunk, and skills competitions on All-Star Saturday Night, along with Sunday prime time coverage of the All-Star Game. Handheld systems employed a mix of SM58®, KSM8, and KSM9 capsules, while bodypack systems were used for a variety of music applications, including wireless guitars and sousaphone. Musical artists for the All-Star Game included The Roots during pregame festivities and John Legend as halftime entertainment.

Firehouse also supplied and managed Shure UHF-R and PSM 1000 systems in the other All-Star venues, the Mercedes Superdome, and the outdoor Champions Square amphitheater, which served as a fan activity area. “The area we were responsible for covers about one square mile, and it was pretty much non-stop activity all week,” says Firehouse Director of Operations for wireless and communications Vinny Siniscal, who was also on site. “Between in-ears and mics, we had between 150 and 160 channels of Shure products on the air. They worked great all week – which is why we use and recommend them!”

With multiple broadcasters and hundreds of visiting media on site, frequency coordination was a crucial activity. For this task, Firehouse brought in RF specialists Frequency Coordination Group (FCG). To create a working frequency plan for the 1200-plus RF systems in use across the site, all media is required to register in advance, which enables Firehouse and FCG to do their coordination.

Frequency Coordination Group President Brooks Schroeder notes, “It’s a pretty big undertaking, but Firehouse makes everything as easy as possible with planning and attention to detail, and by supplying the right gear for the job. The Shure PSM 1000 in-ears are a great example, because they work great, even on stages full of interference from video walls and moving lights.”

One detail that Mark Dittmar appreciates is the extender kits Shure now offers for its handheld wireless transmitters. “It seems like a small thing, but it’s actually a pretty big deal for us,” he says. “When you put a mic flag on a wireless, it pushes your hand lower, possibly covering the transmit antenna at the bottom. If you hold the base directly, you lose a lot of your transmission power. When someone has huge hands that can palm a basketball, all of a sudden, the antenna disappears, and that’s a problem. Fortunately, Shure gets it and developed these extender kits to address the issue.”

The WA653 Mic Flag Extender Kit is compatible with all interchangeable Shure wireless microphone cartridges, and includes 1- and 1.5-inch spacer collars, extending handheld transmitter length by up to 2.5 inches. Multiple kits can be used to achieve even greater extension as needed.

Overall, NBA All-Star Weekend was a huge success, and Audio Coordinator Mark Dittmar credits Firehouse’s team approach and dedication to making it all happen without a problem. “This is our fourth straight year doing this event, and it was easily the best,” he says. “We have a great relationship with the NBA and their broadcast partners, and had an A-list team from top to bottom. We had a crew of 42 in New Orleans, and most of us worked 18-hour days from Friday to Sunday. As for the wireless, the Shure UHF-R and PSM 1000 systems are proven performers that never let us down. That’s why it’s our go-to wireless for events like this.”

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. Hosted by James Corden and dominated by multiple award winners Adele, Beyoncé, and Chance The Rapper, the show featured a wide range of musical styles and unexpected talent pairings. Audio for the CBS telecast was mixed and managed by audio recording trucks from Music Mix Mobile, backline equipment and expertise from ATK Audiotek, and RF system design and frequency coordination by Soundtronics.

As always, performers were encouraged to use their preferred wireless microphones, a Recording Academy policy designed to make the musicians feel comfortable on stage. To help ensure an interference-free evening, the audio crew paired Shure UHF-R® transmitters with Axient AXT600 receivers for increased selectivity. Even the podium microphones were wireless, with Shure UR1 transmitters hidden beneath. In addition, nearly all of the in-ear monitor systems used were Shure PSM 1000 units. The show’s monitor mixers were Mike Parker and Tom Pesa. Dave Bellamy of Soundtronics handled frequency coordination duties.

“In such a heavy RF environment, we need every frequency we can spare,” said Audio Coordinator Michael Abbott. “The flexibility of Axient receivers, with their ability to accommodate a mix of Axient and custom UHF-R transmitters in different ranges, helped meet the needs of artists who requested Shure.”

Those artists included Best Country Solo Performance winner Maren Morris, who sang on a gold plated UR2 transmitter with the classic SM58® mic element. The UR2/SM58 was also used by Demi Lovato, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Tamela Mann, and Kirk Franklin, along with members of Little Big Town.

KSM9 condenser mic elements were found atop the Shure UR2 transmitters used by three members of Pentatonix and one from Little Big Town, while the revolutionary KSM8 dual-diaphragm dynamic was used by Tori Kelly, Cynthi Erivo, and was also featured in Best Americana Album winner William Bell’s performance with Gary Clark Jr. Full Axient systems were used for performances by A Tribe Called Quest, John Legend, and Chance The Rapper.

Of course, not every microphone on stage was wireless. Best Country Album winner Sturgill Simpson sang through a Shure 5575LE, a limited-edition 75th anniversary version of the classic Model 55 Unidyne microphone. All acoustic pianos on the telecast were miked with Beta 181/C condensers, and many guitar cabinets benefitted by using the Shure KSM313 ribbon microphone.

“I've been using the KSM313 Ribbon mics on so many applications lately,” notes music mixer John Harris of Music Mix Mobile. “On this show, we use them on guitar cabinet, where they capture an amazing amount of depth.”

Overall, the 2017 GRAMMY Awards broadcast was as challenging a live event as ever. On the broadcast side, the overall production mixer was Tom Holmes. Inside the Music Mix Mobile trucks, Eric Schilling and John Harris alternated mix duties throughout the lengthy show. Inside the Staples Center, the FOH production mix was provided by Mikael Stewart of ATK Audiotek, working with FOH music mixer Ron Reaves.

“The GRAMMY Awards broadcast is always full of challenges and surprises, and this year was no exception,” notes Shure Artist Relations Manager Cory Lorentz. “We’re always pleased to see so many Shure mics and wireless systems on stage, helping make the GRAMMYs happen for a global audience.”

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. With Yamaha’s firmware version 4.1, sound engineers can monitor and control key features of these premium wireless systems from the mix position during a show. This delivers a significantly-enhanced working environment and an impressive degree of system integration between the components that audio professionals use for the most challenging live events.

Sound engineers can discover connected wireless systems; identify and map each system to the desired input channel; monitor transmitter battery status, RF, and audio signal level; and adjust receiver audio output level when Shure AXT400, QLXD4, or ULXD4 digital receivers are connected to the same network as a Yamaha CL or QL series console. With Axient wireless systems, transmitter input gain can even be controlled remotely from the mixing console through the ShowLink® Access Point.

“Wireless microphones increasingly form the foundation of live shows, but they add critical operating parameters that wired microphones don’t have,” said Rob Fuhlbrugge, Senior Director of Engineering and Product Development at Shure. “This new level of integration between Shure wireless systems and Yamaha mixing consoles puts wired and wireless sources into the same context. By enabling sound engineers to monitor and control a wireless channel as part of the same workflow as wired microphones, the technical differences between them become virtually transparent.”

The enhanced capabilities are the result of collaboration between engineering teams at Shure and Yamaha that has been ongoing for several years. Previous firmware releases enabled CL series consoles to control discovery and patching for Shure ULXD4D and ULXD4Q receivers from the CL console touch panel displays, without the need for Dante Controller PC software. Today’s announcement signals a dramatic expansion of these capabilities and their extension to non-Dante equipped Shure wireless systems.

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. Shure supported the festival opening concert by delivering stellar sound quality and stable wireless performance despite the complexity of the show.

Managed by the sound director of Radio and Television Shanghai, Mr. Ji Haowei, the festival opening ceremony has utilized 4 channels of Shure Axient Wireless Management Network for the hosts. The two hosts have shared the four wireless channels, with two of them used as backup. Following the ceremony, the “Folk Music along the Sea” concert began and its live sound reinforcement was then managed by Mr. Gu Yu, the sound director of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra.

A total of 47 wireless channels were installed to meet the different wireless requirements of the show’s choreography and TV broadcasting. It included 23 channels of Shure UHF-R® Wireless Systems (11 channels of UR1 bodypack transmitters and 12 channels of UR3 plug-in transmitters) and 24 channels of Shure ULX-D™ Digital Wireless Systems. Furthermore, the Shure Wireless Workbench software was also used for full monitoring of the entire frequency network, which was efficiently planned by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra System Engineer, Mr. Zhou Rensuo.

The concert consisted of four chapters - "Wind", "Elegance", "Praise" and "Peace" with a total of 12 songs. To fully demonstrate the beauty of Chinese folk music, almost a full set of folk musical instruments was played during the concert on stage, including wind, string, plucked strings and percussions. The lineup of the concert was also fascinating. It featured numerous renowned musicians and performers from China and overseas.

“Folk Music along the Sea” was created to present the harmonic beauty of Chinese music, through the creative designs in choreography, visual, audio and lighting, which were inspired by the concert’s original music. Given their flawless and efficient wireless performance, Shure ULX-D and UHF-R bodypack transmitters powered up different solo performances of the show, including Chinese transverse flute, ancient instruments (cross-blowing backhand flute), Gu Sheng (Chinese Zither), Erhu, Cello, Korean Drum, Shaoqin, Liuqin (four-stringed Chinese mandolin), Nguyen, Pipa, Jing Hu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle) and Kun Style Opera by Zhang Jun. Meanwhile, the UR3 plug-in transmitters primarily were used for the other solo instrumental performances of drums, Konka Drums and Guzheng.

The sound director of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Mr. Gu Yu, shared the challenges to manage the live sound reinforcement for this concert. Several factors needed to be considered to ensure the success of the show. For example, how to perfectly demonstrate the original sound of each instrument, manage the different settings of the choreography throughout the concert when there was only 30 seconds in-between different scenes on stage, not to mention, maintaining quality for a live recording. Therefore, the use of wired microphones was not ideal, because it would be impossible to have enough time to transition between scenes on stage. This resulted in using a large number of wireless transmitters and receivers.

Given the huge numbers of wireless channels and the complex stage environment, a precise frequency planning is crucial. The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra System Engineer, Mr. Zhou Rensou, deployed the Shure Wireless Workbench software throughout the concert from pre-show frequency planning and to live performance monitoring ensuring a stable and uninterrupted wireless performance.

Each nation has a signature sound of their own, and the best way to know it is through local folk music. Once again, Shure wireless systems have demonstrated their unparalleled audio quality and stability with tremendous success to the performers and audience.

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. The P300 offers Shure IntelliMix DSP algorithms that significantly enhance the audio quality in video meetings, a variety of connectivity options, plus seamless operation with Shure Microflex® Advance™ and Microflex® Wireless microphone solutions for AV conferencing.

Team collaboration in the modern agile workplace has expanded from purpose-built videoconferencing rooms to impromptu meetings held in flexible workspaces throughout the office, but premium audio processors – and the programming and setup they require – are not always cost-effective for these rooms. The IntelliMix P300 is a compact, simple to install solution providing professional conferencing technology that offers just the right set of features to create a highly intelligible, collaborative meeting experience in these spaces.

The new processor connects up to eight Dante microphone channels to a room video system, USB soft codec, or mobile device. Each channel supports multiple IntelliMix DSP features, including Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), Noise Reduction, and Automatic Gain Control, plus best-in-class automatic mixing. These features provide full duplex communication for echo- and noise-free meetings.

The fixed architecture provides simple and intuitive setup, resulting in less DSP programming and commissioning time onsite. The USB connectivity enables the P300 to be used with common soft codec programs such as Skype and BlueJeans, while the 3.5 mm connector means anyone on a mobile phone or tablet can easily bring any remote participant into the conversation. Its compact half-rack footprint enables discrete installation behind a display, under a table, or in a credenza.

“Great audio should not be reserved for boardrooms – it should be in every room,” said Paul Gunia, Product Manager at Shure. “The Microflex Advance and Microflex Wireless product lines are the most innovative microphones on the market. We strove to develop a powerful yet simple to configure DSP that complements our networked microphone systems. A conference room designed with Microflex and an IntelliMix P300 processor will provide our customer a full Shure audio solution, without requiring extensive program training or installation considerations. Now any size room can fully support a quality audio conference call.”

In addition to the IntelliMix P300, Shure is introducing the ANIUSB-MATRIX and ANI22 at ISE. The ANIUSB-MATRIX provides flexible routing of up to four Dante audio inputs and one analog input to a room video conferencing system or a soft codec. This device is ideal for accommodating small to medium sized rooms intended for audio and video conferencing. With fewer features compared to the P300, the ANIUSB-MATRIX offers the ideal performance, connectivity, and affordability for videoconferencing where a premium microphone solution is desired, but acoustic echo cancellation of a hardware or software codec will be used. The ANI22 provides Dante-to-analog signal routing that enables two audio channels to be routed on and off a Dante network. These additions to the ANI family increase the connectivity options available to users of Shure’s Dante-enabled microphones.

The IntelliMix P300, ANIUSB-MATRIX, and ANI22 will be available worldwide in fall 2017.

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. Shure now has formed partnerships with Cisco, Crestron, Polycom, Biamp, QSC, Symetrix, Yamaha, Audinate, Chief and others.

The partnership program ranges from information for system integrators, such as configuration and setup guides that ensure optimum performance, to embedded plug-ins that provide native control and audio integration. The goal is to communicate that Shure audio products like Microflex® Advance™ and Microflex® Wireless have been tested and are compatible with popular downstream equipment. This reduces setup and configuration time for system integrators and administrators, and streamlines the workflow involved in using the completed system.

“It’s not just about how well products work; it’s about how well products work together,” said Chad Wiggins, Senior Category Director for Networked Systems at Shure. “The goal of our partnership program is to enhance the ‘Five Cs’ – connectivity, control, customization, confidence, and convenience – for our customers. Our success in the marketplace depends more than ever on how easy it is to use Shure products with other brands and other types of products. That’s why it’s critical that we continue to form partnerships with other significant companies in the AV industry.”

About Shure Incorporated

Founded in 1925, Shure Incorporated (www.shure.com) is widely acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of microphones and audio electronics. In addition, they work in the UHF TV band as well as other frequency bands, providing operability in countries or environments where Microflex Wireless bands are already used or unavailable.

At convention centers, hotels, and in corporate and educational environments, handhelds or lavaliers are often the default options, even though boundaries or goosenecks would be the more applicable, convenient solution for all participants involved. With the new ULX-D boundary and gooseneck transmitters, Shure now provides powerful, flexible wireless options that are compatible with ULX-D and QLX-D digital receivers. When used with ULX-D receivers in High Density mode, users can achieve high channel counts of 100 or more. For confidential discussions that require secure transmission, ULX-D features AES-256 encryption.

“When we introduced ULX-D a few years ago, it became clear that this digital platform would deliver exceptional audio quality while making extremely efficient use of spectrum. That combination, along with leading features such as Dante networking and encryption, has been a great fit for professional users throughout the world,” explains Nick Wood, Wireless Category Director at Shure. “Over time we realized there was a strong demand for tabletop form factors that are intuitive to setup and operate. Now with our new ULX-D boundary and gooseneck transmitters that are also fully compatible with QLX-D, we successfully close this gap.”

The ULXD6 boundary and the ULXD8 gooseneck transmitter offer a low-profile form factor, which is the perfect choice for meetings and events where quick and easy setup and teardown are key. With a long transmission range (up to 330 feet/100 meters) and an extensive selection of antenna distribution components, ULXD6 and ULXD8 are efficiently scalable. Both new ULX-D additions run with standard AA batteries or Shure SB900A rechargeable batteries, providing nine hours of operating time, and can be quickly replaced so meetings can continue uninterrupted.

The SBC450 4-bay and SBC850 8-bay networked charging stations allow four or eight ULXD6 or ULXD8 transmitters to be charged fast and conveniently, without removing the battery from the transmitter. Through the network, users can easily monitor and change transmitter settings or install firmware updates while they are charging. The Shure Wireless Workbench® software solution as well as third party control systems (AMX, Crestron, Extron, Cue, etc.) facilitate remote access to the transmitters’ parameters.

The ULXD6 boundary and ULXD8 gooseneck transmitters will be available in summer 2017.
