Axient Wireless System and PSM1000 Support Spectacular Performances at Opening & Closing Ceremonies of 28th SEA Games

Singapore, June 2015 - After 22 years the South East Asian Games (SEA Games) returned to the shores of Singapore and thrilled audiences around the world with Opening & Closing Ceremonies of unprecedented scale and technical brilliance. Hosted at the new 55,000 capacity National Stadium, the 28th SEA Games were the largest event to take place at this venue to date, with over 5,000 performers and volunteers involved in the events.

For the first time in Singapore, an extensive aerial system, custom-designed and built for the stadium was featured as part of the Opening Ceremony Show segment, allowing performers and props to ‘fly’ across the stadium and expanding the performance space from a two- to a three-dimensional space. In addition to the extraordinary choreography, the huge dome-like structure of the National Stadium proved to be a major challenge for the audio system design. To ensure that everyone participating in the Opening & Closing Ceremonies were heard loud and clear, Show Company (ShowCo), the rental house tasked with audio duties, turned to Shure.

With equipment provided by Electronics & Engineering (E&E), authorized Shure distributor in Singapore, the events deployed the Shure Axient Wireless System and PSM1000 Personal Monitor Systems. The systems were used around the whole stadium, transmitting not only the minister’s speeches and supporting performers as they delivered the shows, but also enabling emcees to move up and around the seating area to interact with the audience. In addition to Axient, the UHF-R Wireless System with UR3 plug-on Wireless Microphone Transmitters were used at the rostrum on the portable stage at the center of the stadium field.

The advanced wireless technology and unprecedented spectrum management capabilities of Axient ensured flawless audio throughout the events. A total of 24 Axient channels were used during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, with a mix of AXT200 Handheld and AXT100 Bodypack Transmitters. To ensure clearest audio at all times, the sound engineers could remotely adjust wireless microphone settings in real time, using the ShowLink Remote Control feature. A wireless network link between Axient receivers and transmitters allowed the audio team to make crucial changes to transmitter settings, without ever leaving the control booth.

With many TV stations live broadcasting these large scale events and other wireless systems, intercoms, and digital devices crowding the RF environment, signal interference was also a main concern in the preparation phase. Axient Interference Detection and Avoidance offered the ideal solution. Not only providing alerts when RF interference occurred, the system also automatically moved to clean frequencies within milliseconds, making even major interference issues nearly undetectable and delivering the confidence of knowing that no matter what, interference would not ruin the show.

The Shure PSM1000 Personal Monitor System complemented the wireless microphone solution, with four P10T Dual Channel Wireless Transmitters and eight P10R Bodypack Receivers providing in-ear monitoring for performers and emcees.

Besides installing the wireless audio systems and providing full preparation and live support, the E&E System Applications Team also trained the team from ShowCo on the use of cables and connectors, as well as ideal antenna placement to achieve best possible coverage, while considering the aesthetics of the show design. This was a main consideration for the organizers and they very highly satisfied with the solutions offered by the E&E team.
