Shure Aids Magnificent Performances at 2015 IAAF World Championships’ Opening and Closing Ceremonies

Beijing, August 30, 2015 – The biennial World Championships are the jewel of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Athletic Series of events. Similar to the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Championships play to packed stadiums and attract TV audiences in their billions. This year, the 15th edition of the sports event was hosted at the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium in Beijing, with colorful and stunning artistic performances during the opening and closing ceremonies creating the perfect framework for this leading athletics event.

The elaborate shows, performed in front of 50,000 fans and broadcasted to spectators around the world, required tailored audio solutions to ensure pitch-perfect live sound. The head audio designer of the ceremonies, Mr. Song Duo Duo, turned to Shure, relying on the excellent audio quality and reliability of Axient and QLX-D Wireless Systems, and PSM1000 Personal Monitor Systems.

While the opening and closing ceremonies varied in format and stage designs, two performances built the center pieces of each show: A stunning aerial acrobatics routine on wires, executed by the beautiful dancer and actress Angel of the Clouds, and the performance of the event’s theme song Fly With Your Dreams, conducted by leading domestic singers Tan Weiwei and Sha Baoliang.

Uninterrupted Monitoring From Air to Ground

During her splendid performance, Angel of the Clouds soared above the audience in the National Stadium, pirouetting through the air. Requiring strong and reliable long-range transmission in such a vast venue, the PSM1000 in-ear monitoring system was utilized to provide the artist with perfectly synced accompaniments and rhythm control for her performance.

On the ground, the famous pianist Li Yundi led a troupe of celebrity performers at the Opening Ceremony, in his first ever collaboration with contemporary electronic musicians. Supporting this artistic collision between classical piano and electronic music, Mr. Li Yundi was also equipped with a PSM1000 Diversity Bodypack Receiver and premium SE846 Sound Isolating™ Earphones for high quality acoustic monitoring.

Continuously praised for its exceptional functionality, the PSM100 system once again displayed personal monitoring at an unmatched level. The rack-mount dual channel transmitters are perfectly suited for such demanding, large-scale live events. And with a 72MHz wide tuning range, and comprehensive frequency coordination capabilities via the Shure Wireless Workbench software, the system ensured exceptionally reliable transmission even when faced with highly complex RF environments.

Crystal Clear Audio Across The Entire Stadium

The grand finale of both the Opening & Closing Ceremony featured the performance of the sport event’s theme song Fly With Your Dreams, conducted by leading domestic singers Tan Weiwei and Sha Baoliang.

At the opening event, the singers – performing from a stage built into the seating area of the stadium – were equipped with the Shure QLX-D Digital Wireless System. The QLX-D system utilizes advanced, 24-bit digital transmission for high clarity and flawless audio performance, offering the perfect combination of professional functions and simplified setup and operation.

The closing ceremony stunned the audience with different choreography and setup, with the theme song being delivered from a big stage at the center of the Beijing National Stadium. With receiver antennas positioned as far as 150 meters away from the wireless microphones, the singers were handed a combination of Axient handheld wireless microphones and the PSM1000 wireless in-ear monitors to ensure uninterrupted, reliable transmission and premium audio quality. The Axient receivers feature onboard interference detection and avoidance, which automatically detects RF interference and immediately switches to clean, compatible frequencies within milliseconds. Completed by the AXT200 Handheld Transmitters, which feature a frequency diversity function that simultaneously transmits audio signals on two separate frequencies, the Axient wireless system continues to operate most reliably, even with intense RF interference.

Besides the wireless performance of QLX-D and Axient, the KSM9 condenser microphone heads were chosen for the handheld transmitters to complement the vocal qualities of the two leading singers. The standard KSM9 was chosen for male singer Sha Baoliang's performance to showcase the melodious baritones of his incredible voice and deliver straightforward, accurate sound rendering and clarity consistent with studio microphones. Meanwhile, the KSM9/HS was selected for the female signer Tan Weiwei. Exclusively designed to magnify the vocal traits of Asian singers, it features an enhanced capability for capturing the most intricate tones of the human voice and is exceptionally compatible with Tan Weiwei's high-pitched, powerful voice.

Complete Software Solution

To provide real-time performance monitoring and ensure flawless execution of the production sequences, all wireless products deployed at the events were connected to a controlled network using the Shure Wireless Workbench 6 (WWB6) Software. WWB6 is the most efficient wireless system control software currently available on the market. It provides a comprehensive interface that enables monitoring and control of all connected equipment set up within the venue, including frequency planning before actual performances and real-time monitoring during events.

It is the attention to detail that delivers premier quality and enabled the spectacular performances and success of the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
